I would like to know if anyone has any information or stories about "haunted" items such as furniture... cases where the unusual activity seems to be centred on a particular object rather than a place.
The reason for my interest is an unusual experience I had many years ago with an old mirror. When I was in college I shared an apartment with two other girls. We furnished it with bits and pieces that we all brought with us. One of the items contributed by one of my roommates was an old mirror that looked like it had once been part of a dresser. We hung it on the wall of our dining area, next to the table.
Bear with me while I describe the apartment a little. At the north end of the apartment was the dining/livingroom area with a kitchen in an alcove off the livingroom. Leading from the dining area was a hallway with three bedrooms on the left, a bathroom at the end of the hallway and another half-bathroom off the right side of the hallway.
My roommate who occupied the bedroom at the far end of the hallway was a fiend for warmth; the room had its own thermostat and she always had it cranked up. Consequently our cat always slept in that room. It was also known that she (the roommate, not the cat) never, ever left her window open.
As you could expect in a household comprised of three young women, time in front of a mirror was much in demand. I noticed one night when we were all getting ready to go out that we would all wait for our turn in one of the bathrooms rather than use the mirror in the dining room. When I thought about it I realized that we had always done that. And I further realized that the idea of standing in front of that mirror made me feel uncomfortable.
Well one night my two roommates were out and I was home alone. I was sitting at the dining room table reading a book. Suddenly I heard the sound of the window in the far bedroom slamming. I would have assumed it was a window falling shut by itself, except that was the room where the window was never left open.
That startled me, then I heard, from the vicinity of the window in the bedroom a sort of "sizzling" sound start out along the wall. It sounded either like a sizzle or like something like a nail being dragged along the wall. It was very audible. I listened to it travel around the three walls of that bedroom then heard it come out the bedroom door, travel right into the main bathroom, around those three walls, come out the bathroom door again, travel down the hallway towards me, pausing to travel around the three walls of the small bathroom, back out, and around the hallway corner into the room in which I was sitting.
Needless to say my eyes were glued to the wall at about waist height where the sound seemed to be. I saw nothing. But I suddenly absolutely knew what was going to happen. The sound traveled around the corner and along the wall directly behind me (I twisted around in my seat to watch the spot) and then stopped, directly under the old mirror to my right.
Our cat came tearing down the hallway from the bedroom where the sound originated, just like she'd "seen a ghost". I picked her up and went and looked in the bedroom to see if she had maybe knocked something over that would have caused the original slamming sound, but couldn't see anything like that. The window, as it always was, was shut.
So I turned the TV on loud and all the lights on.
I didn't mention it to my roommates for awhile. Later one of them was telling me she thought there was a strange feeling in the apartment, like we had a ghost, and I said, "I know. It's in the mirror." That freaked her out so I told her the story then.
I moved out some time later and I really don't know what happened to the mirror after that.
That's the story. I'm just curious to know if anyone has had any similar experiences with objects.
