Amy Soppet
Poem

Eyes

my brother's eyes
peer through a cage of
blonde lashes
like a set of twin fears
in a hero's face

a battle man of renown
a dubious knight
he walks as though he has never
been hurt
forward
striking
each step a double dare
an ultimatum

but it is his eyes
that force response
steadfast
visceral
a Renaissance rendering in brilliance
that never graced a canvas

they hit the back of my soul
with an unlikely force
scattering small chips of adoration
across my heart

I rarely see past my brother's eyes
